Our Curriculum
Language Arts
Our Language Arts program includes read-alouds from classic children’s literature, nursery rhymes, Aesop’s fables, and fairy tales. Our PreKindergarten curriculum also has a strong phonics program using Pearson Sing, Spell, Read and Write. Sing, Spell, Read & Write uses phonics songs, interactive charts, and games to teach the alphabetic principle, phonemic awareness, sound/letter correspondence, short vowel sounds, and blending – in a fun and meaningful way. By the end of Kindergarten students will be reading fully-decodable story books with single-, short- vowel words.
Mathematics
Everyday Mathematics is a comprehensive Pre-K through grade 6 mathematics program developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project and published by McGraw-Hill Education. Every year in the US, about 4.3 million students in 220,000 classrooms are using Everyday Mathematics.
Art, Nature Study, Health, Safety, and Early Childhood Learning
HighReach Learning curriculum program provides planning strategies, learning experiences, and support materials that help create intriguing and interest driven investigations.
Orthodox Curriculum
Each school day opens and closes with prayer in the classroom’s prayer corner. The Orthodox faith, values, and principles are lived throughout the day and are taught through stories from the Bible and lives of the Saints. Children learn the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, liturgical hymns and songs, and much more. They participate in Chapel Services twice weekly and enjoy classroom visits from clergy and guests. Our curriculum follows the rhythm and flow of the Church calendar; feasts and fasts are celebrated experientially and naturally throughout the year. Each semester, the school participates in food, clothing, and toy drives for local charities. The students also invite their parents to ‘Donuts for Dad’ and ‘Mother’s Day Tea Parties’ where they can show their love and gratitude in a special way. The rich beauty of Orthodoxy is difficult to describe but easy to experience. All are invited to ‘Come and See.’
Music
St. Elijah Mom’s Day Out and PreK is a licensed MusikGarten school and offers a full music program through the music/movement of Musikgarten and the Orthodox hymns and songs presented in the Orthodox Curriculum and Chapel.
Cultural Appreciation
We have been blessed with families from many diverse cultures. Each month, the school hosts guests who present to the children a different country or culture. The children learn about the traditional clothing, food, music, and customs of Bulgaria, Comanche Nation and Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Greece, Jordan, Russia, Scotland, and more. Our diversity of cultures is celebrated along with the common thread we have in our humanity and our faith and love in God.
